Obituary

Barbara A. Cohen-Pippin, 73, of Palm Coast, FL passed peacefully at home on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Born in Boston, MA and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Barbara was the daughter of the now-late Elizabeth Cohen Thomas. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Rhode Island and her Master's of Education from the University of Massachusetts. Over a span of 40 years, Barbara enjoyed an impressive career, beginning with the Palm Beach County Community Action Agency (CAA) under the leadership of Mrs. Maude Lee. She was recruited to the Florida Department of Community Affairs where she was appointed Agency Liaison for CAA's in 17 South Florida counties. Her leadership, productivity, tenacity and integrity propelled her into the executive-level of state government. From 1979 -1985, Barbara served as a Higher Education Legislative Analyst for the Senate Committee on Education. After being promoted, she served as Staff Director for this Unit for three years before being named Executive Staff Policy Coordinator for Education for the Office of the Governor, serving for two years. She returned to the Senate for almost seven years as Legislative Chief Analyst for the Committee on Higher Education. Barbara was tapped to become Special Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations at Broward Community College, serving for eleven and a half years. Even with all of her accomplishments, Barbara made time for family and friends. She held membership in or served on the boards of several community-based organizations, including, but not limited to: Florida Association of Community Action Agencies, NAACP (Education Chair), United Way, Leadership Gainesville, Diocesan Office of Black Catholic Ministry, Casa Calderone, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Thomas More Co-Cathedral and FAMU Catholic and the Broward County Urban League. She faithfully the Rosary and attended Mass daily. Barbara was a woman of incredible strength, love and kindness. She may have departed this earthly life, but her spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us all. Survivors include her devoted husband, Welmon B. Pippin; bonus children: Welmon B. Pippin, Jr. and Kimberly Pippin; brothers: Robert Cabral and Michael Cohen; sisters: Susan Green and Margaret Dreyton; bonus siblings: Vital Soares and Antonia Soares; sister-in-law, Deborah King; brother-in-law, Juan Pippin; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous godchildren; and countless other loving relatives and friends.
