Obituary

Barbara Ann Merritt was born on December 24, 1957 in Lloyd, Florida. She was the daughter of James Merritt and Ernestine Geathers. Both of her parents and grandparents, Leroy and Gertrude Geathers, all preceded her in death.

As a child, Barbara grew up being greatly influenced by her grandmother, Gertrude Lockett Geathers. Mrs. Geathers was a longtime, devoted member of Greater Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. There, Barbara began her Christian walk. She was baptized at Greater Elizabeth and for most of her early years, she was active in all aspects of the church, including the Youth Choir where she often led songs.

Barbara attended the public schools of Jefferson and Leon Counties. She attended Lively Vocational-Technical School and earned certification as a Certified Nurse's Assistant. She worked in her area of training for several years prior to her health declining and precluding her from continuing to work.

A fun-loving person, Barbara was candid and forthright in all of her dealings. One never had to guess what her position was for she would always let you know where she stood. She was a born comedian who could bring laughter to any situation. She was a great dancer, vocalist and loving person. On Friday, January 15, 2021, God summoned Barbara Home for her eternal rest. Forever cherishing her precious memories are sisters: Francine Parish, Monticello, FL, Carolyn Nix, Tallahassee, FL, Cheryl (Derrick) Byrd, Monticello, FL, Jeanette M. (Michael) Randolph, Rochester, NY, Sylvia Merritt and Linda M. (King) Britt, both of Tallahassee, FL; brothers: Valentine Smith, Arthur J. (Sharon) Williams and Cleveland (Jecheta) Blackshear, all of Tallahassee, FL and Willie James Merritt of Lauderhill, FL; aunts: Annie M. (James) Graham, Tallahassee, FL, Gloria Geathers, Miami, FL and Bernice Garland of Deltona, FL; uncle: Leroy Geathers; great-uncle: Willie James (Betty) Jackson, both of Tallahassee, FL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loving friends.
