BISHOP TOMMY L. HUGHES, SR. was born in Perry, Florida on June 26, 1941 to Lawrence, Sr. and Edna Robinson Hughes. Both parents preceded him in death.
Bishop Hughes graduated from Jenkins High School and earned his Associate's degree from Suwannee River Jr. College. He also attended Florida A&M University (FAMU) and completed coursework in Industrial Arts and Engineering before being drafted into the U. S. Army. While in the military, Bishop Hughes spent eight months in Seoul, South Korea, where he served during the Korean Conflict. In civilian life, he worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad as a Train Conductor for 25 years before retiring in 1994. On September 4, 1966, Tommy Hughes and the former Minister Emma Danzy were joined in Holy Matrimony. Their blessed union produced twelve children: Tommy Jr. (Sandra), Malcolm (Lienita), Malthus, Sebastian (Leslie), Aquilina (Michael), Byron (Tiffany), Edneatra, Everett, Valerie (DeMario), Emily (deceased), Michael and Ranata. He was also extremely proud of his twelve grandchildren. He loved his siblings: Norma Scott, Wilhelmenia, Lawrence (Betty Jean), James (Lorene), John (Joan) and Henry (deceased).
Bishop Hughes served in pastoral ministry for 60 years. During that time, he served with distinction as shepherd of Glorious Rain COGOP, Perry, Florida; Greenville COGOP, Greenville, Florida; and two tenures at the Hampton Springs COGOP, Perry, Florida. Bishop Hughes' hobbies included: photography, deep sea fishing, hunting, collecting guns, traveling, frequenting thrift shops, spreading God's Word, and spending quality time with family.
Bishop Hughes' compassion and care for others were the hallmark of his life and vital to his ministry as a Bishop. He was committed to the work of the Church of God of Prophecy and to its role in the life of the household of faith. He had great love and respect for leaders, and the laity alike.
Bishop Hughes led with grace, humility and strength. He didn't just preach sermons – he built a community. He baptized new believers, guided families through grief and celebration, and raised up generations of leaders. To his family, he was a steady presence. To his church, he was a spiritual father. To his community, he was a voice of hope. And to everyone who knew him, he was a man who truly lived what he preached. His legacy of faith will continue through the lives he touched. His story doesn't end here – it lives on in every sermon remembered, every prayer answered, and every person inspired by his example.
It is our profound honor to have been entrusted with the care of His Grace, Bishop Tommy L. Hughes, Sr. and to serve the Hughes family.
