Viewing-visitation will be 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2026, at the TILLMAN OF TALLAHASSEE CHAPEL (850-942-1950).

OTIS JOHNSON was the beloved son of Booker T. Johnson, Sr. and Katie Bell Thompson Johnson. He was born in Tallahassee-Leon County, Florida on August 31, 1938. His parents, as well as his infant son: Melvin Otis Johnson; and his siblings: Wallace, Theodore and Glover Johnson, Lillian Johnson Reshard and Vivian Johnson Tucker, all preceded him to Glory.

Formative years for OTIS were spent in his native Tallahassee where he was educated. On February 12, 1959, he married the former Urlee Washington, his childhood sweetheart.

After working several low-paying jobs, adhering to the advice of his brothers-in-law, John and Nathaniel, to relocate for better living in 1963, OTIS moved his family to Chester, Pennsylvania.

Over the years, he worked several jobs before beginning a long and rewarding career with Turner Construction Company in 1978. He began as a laborer and in the same year, he was promoted to laborer foreman. He was active in the union but forfeited his affiliation to become an Assistant Superintendent after a stellar 25-year career. Having confessed Christ as his Redeeming Savior many years ago while in Tallahassee, OTIS continued with his faith when he relocated to Chester. He became an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church and served faithfully in several ministries, including the Choir. On June 16, 1980, he was ordained as a Deacon. He served as Chairman of the Deacons Board from 1988 – 1991 and received countless accolades for his dedication and untiring leadership.

In 1982, DEACON JOHNSON moved his family from Chester, Pennsylvania to Wilmington, Delaware. Upon his move, he was the recipient of countless plaques and awards from his pastor and fellow members at Shiloh.

In his leisure, DEACON JOHNSON was all about making life better for him, his family, church and surroundings. He enjoyed gardening; keeping his vehicles in immaculate condition; renovating and-or adding to his home and playing baseball (left field, center field) up until age caught up with him, then he enjoyed watching the game. Truly, he was able to live his favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."

On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in the still of the night at his home, DEACON OTIS JOHNSON surrendered all to the Will of God and went Home to receive his crown. We believe that as he was transitioning, he was humming one of his favorite songs, "I Got A Feelin' Everything's Gonna Be Alright!" His love and legacy will be cherished forever by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years: Urelee Washington Johnson; children: Marcus (Cookie) Johnson, Karriemah Allah-Marcia (Karriem-Kevin), Glenda Johnson (David) Nichols and Carlette Johnson Miah; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings: Booker T. Johnson, Jr., Robert Badger, Vera Mae Johnson and Geraldine McQueen; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

It is our profound honor to serve the Johnson Family.
