Deacon Henry Murphy, Sr. was born on April 27, 1924, in Apalachicola, Florida, to John and Annie Murphy. His mother, Annie, served the community as a midwife. At an early age, he was adopted and raised by Mrs. Olivia Williams alongside her son, Clarence Williams.

She instilled in him a deep reverence for God and a lifelong commitment to serving others. After graduating from Dunbar High School, he proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a Dental Technician in the Medical Corps of the 277 Quarter Master Battalion. His military service took him to Boston, France, Belgium and Germany.

Following his honorable service, Deacon Murphy pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science from Florida Memorial College and a Master of Education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). He expanded his studies further by attending Meharry Medical College and Atlanta University, and he achieved his APD in educational administration at Florida State University (FSU). During his early teaching years in Taylor County, he met Florence A. Hunter. The couple shared 64 years of marriage.

Professionally, Deacon Murphy dedicated 42 years to the field of education. He worked as a teacher, advisor, and principal across Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, earning deep respect for his energetic and honest commitment to his students.

Deacon Murphy's faith and civic dedication was equally profound. He was an active member of Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church starting in 1963 and served in numerous leadership roles for the First Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Association. In his community, he served as Former President of the American Lung Association; a board member for the Steele Collins Charter School; and the longest serving active member of the Frontiers International Tallahassee Chapter.

Deacon Murphy celebrated his centennial birthday on April 27, 2024. His century of wisdom, compassion, and service leaves a lasting legacy, honored permanently by the dedication of the Deacon Henry Murphy, Sr. Conference Room and the establishment of a scholarship award in his name.

Deacon Murphy leaves to mourn and carry on his legacy, his four children: Henry Murphy, Jr., Andrea (Bernard) Murphy, Felecia M. (Michael) Johnson and Frederica (Terry) Edwards; ten grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four devoted nieces and nephews: Anderson (Renee) Williams, Nikiti (James) Stanley, Carolyn Williams and Deandre (Phillip) O'Neal; and a host of other relatives and friends.
