Irma Jean Shingles-Hughes was born in Wakulla, Florida on April 2, 1952. She was the third of six children born to Henry and Rutha Mae Lewis Shingles. Both of her parents and loving brother, Bobby L. Shingles, all preceded her in death.

Irma attended the public schools of Leon County, Florida, graduating from James A. Rickards High School. She later earned her Bachelor's degree from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Irma was employed at Greyhound as a ticket agent. Later, she began working at Florida A&M University in the Business department. She also was employed with Southern Telephone Company as an operator for many years. Her pride and joy was working along side her father and siblings at the historical Shingles Chicken House, that was founded by her father.

Irma gave her life to Christ at an early age. She was a member of Powerhouse Church Of God In Christ, Tallahassee, Florida. On Saturday, October 12, 2019, our loved one, Irma Jean Shingles-Hughes, transitioned Home for her eternal rest. Forever cherishing Irma's love and legacy are her devoted sons: Jayson (Monique) Johnson and Marlon Hughes, both of Tallahassee, FL; loving grandchildren: Jabari Johnson, Tallahassee, FL and Mosahn Henegain of Tampa, FL; brothers: Samuel (Cynthia) Shingles, Ronald Shingles and Darryl (Desiree) Shingles, all of Tallahassee, FL; her only sister: Renee Shingles Russ of Tallahassee, FL; aunts: Blone E. Johnson, Tallahassee, FL, Willa Mae Seabrooks, Monticello, FL, Ida Mae Monroe, Atlanta, GA, Dorothy S. Scott and Jessie Mae Shingles, both of Wakulla, FL; uncle: Joseph Williams of Wakulla, FL; and host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
