A Tallahassee native, James "Jimmy" Houston, Sr., was born on April 8, 1951, to the late Joseph and Annie Barnes Houston. He was the only son of five children and the second oldest in the family. Jimmy graduated from the Original Lincoln High School in Tallahassee.

On April 8, 1991, "Jimmy" married the love of his life, Debra Williams. He worked for the Tallahassee Democrat and later for the Leon County School District Department of Transportation, where he retired after 17 years of dedicated service. A talented mechanic, "Jimmy" also worked in several local auto shops over the years.

Among his close racing friends, the Tallahassee Stables and Triple J Racing, he was known as "China Boy." "Jimmy" was a proud Florida Gators fan who loved watching football, working on cars, and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends.  He also loved socializing with the fellows in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot.
