It is with heartfelt sympathy, we announce the passing of Ms. Mildred J. Lawrence, 69, of Tallahassee, Florida, who departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2026, at Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church, 3727 Woodville Hwy, Tallahassee, FL 32305.
EARLY LIFE & CHILDHOOD
Mildred J. Lawrence was born on August 8, 1956, and was raised in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by family, faith, and community. She was the beloved daughter of Rosa Lee McCormick and Washington Lawrence. She shared her life journey with her siblings: Barbara Lawrence, Otis Lawrence, David Lawrence, Rosa Lee Lawrence, Catherine Lawrence, Julia Mae Carter-Lawrence, and Uncle Man. She attended Riley Elementary School, Griffin Middle School, Godby High School, and later FAMU. From an early age, Mildred developed the values that guided her throughout life— faith in God, hard work, honesty, and devotion to family. She also worked faithfully and devoted over 25 years of service to the Department of Revenue, where she was respected for her dedication, professionalism, and commitment. Those who knew her understood quickly that she was strong-minded, loving, protective, and always willing to stand for what was right.
FAITH & SPIRITUAL LIFE
Faith was the foundation of Mildred’s life. Her relationship with Christ was something she lived daily. She was raised at Union Branch Missionary Baptist Church and later became active in ministry for a season of her life. Prayer was part of her everyday routine. Every morning when she awoke, she prayed. No matter what your problems were, she would activate prayer. Her children knew that before the day even began, Momma had already called on the Lord.
Two of her favorite scriptures were Psalm 23:4—“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.”— and Matthew 19:26—“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” She believed deeply that if you put God first, everything else would fall into place according to His will.
LOVE FOR FAMILY
Above all else, Mildred loved her family and friends unconditionally. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, counselor, protector, and friend. She sacrificed endlessly so her children could have the best life possible. She celebrated her children’s accomplishments proudly and stood beside them during every challenge life presented. Even from miles away, she checked on her children faithfully and reminded them they could always come home. Her love continues through her children, grandchildren— Jalen, Jason, and Myrical— and through the many lives she touched along the way.
HER PERSONALITY & CHARACTER
Mildred had a personality that could never be forgotten. She was honest, wise, funny, and unapologetically herself. If she had something to say, she said it directly, but always from a place of love. Her humor could instantly lighten a room. Phrases like “gmoney, big head, junior, drina, angie wangie, polar bear” and “sugar baby” became treasured expressions her family will carry forever. She also had a nurturing spirit. She mentored others, prayed for people, and opened her home to children in need, caring for them as if they were her own.
COOKING & HOME LIFE
One of the greatest expressions of Mildred’s love came through her cooking and the comfort of her home. Family gatherings were filled with laughter, conversation, and home-cooked meals that brought everyone together. She had an amazing eye for interior decorating and loved making spaces feel warm, welcoming, and full of life. Her home became a place of connection, storytelling, and love.
SUPPORT, ENCOURAGEMENT & LIFE LESSONS
Mildred was more than a mother— she was a motivator and prayer warrior. She encouraged her family to work hard, stay humble, and trust God through every season of life. Through both her words and actions, she taught responsibility, resilience, honesty, and faith. Her family will always remember her wisdom, her prayers, and her constant reminders to keep family close.
HER LEGACY
The legacy of Mildred Lawrence is one of unwavering faith, unconditional love, strength, and sacrifice. She leaves behind a family strengthened by her prayers, guided by her wisdom, and forever shaped by her love. Though her earthly journey has ended, the memories she created and the values she instilled will continue through generations to come.
FAMILY SHE LEAVES BEHIND
Mildred Lawrence is lovingly remembered and survived by her four children: her daughter: Dr. Angela Lawrence; her daughter: April Lawrence and grandchild, Myrical Lawrence; son, Sylvester (Shana) Brown along with their two grandsons: Jalen Riley and Jason Brown; and her son, Jermaine (LeeAnn) Powell.
CLOSING REFLECTION

Though we will miss her deeply, we find comfort in knowing that her spirit lives in the hearts of those she loved so dearly.
